What is the UGBA?
The United Gamefowl Breeders Association was founded in 1975. Learn more on our About page. Our official website is UGBANow.com.
What are gamefowl?
They are domestic chickens associated with traditional game breeds and breeding lines. Individual breeds and lines differ in size, appearance, and temperament. The Old English Game breed profile gives one example; it does not describe every gamefowl breed.
Where should a beginner start?
Start with our beginner guide. Check local keeping rules, prepare suitable housing, locate poultry veterinary care, and learn from experienced keepers before purchasing birds.
Can gamefowl live with my existing flock?
Do not assume that unfamiliar birds will mix safely. Compatibility depends on the birds, sex, temperament, and housing. Plan secure separation for incompatible birds, particularly adult males, and seek experienced advice before introducing birds. Prevent injuries rather than allowing aggression to continue.
How long should I keep new birds separate?
USDA recommends 30 days. Use separate equipment and prevent contamination between groups. Ask your veterinarian about testing, illness, and your flock’s specific needs. Quarantine reduces risk; it does not certify a bird as disease-free. See USDA’s checklist.
What should I feed them?
Choose a complete poultry ration suitable for age and purpose, and provide clean, fresh water. Treats and scratch grain should not replace balanced feed. Consult your veterinarian or Extension office for a feeding plan. See Minnesota Extension’s poultry-care guidance.
What if a bird seems sick?
Contact a poultry veterinarian promptly. Unusual deaths, breathing changes, or a sudden change in activity or appetite need attention. Avoid moving birds to a show or another flock while illness is being investigated. Follow USDA’s flock biosecurity guidance.
Can I visit a poultry show before owning birds?
Ask the organizer about admission, visitor access, dates, and biosecurity rules. A visit can help you learn how entries and classes work. Confirm requirements with the event host before transporting or entering any birds.
Does NPIP status cover every show requirement?
No. NPIP is a voluntary federal-state program with specific disease-testing and certification classifications. Ask the organizer and relevant state animal-health officials which documents and tests are required for your birds and destination. Read USDA’s NPIP overview.
Which states are affiliated?
UGBA’s affiliated states include Mississippi, Missouri, Oregon, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Tennessee’s chapter information is pending. Alabama and West Virginia are not affiliated. Contact UGBA if you need help finding a chapter.
How do I join, and what is included?
